Journey’s Pit Cook

Journey Middle School, 5:30 a.m.: Henry Chipps is up at the crack of dawn to get the fire started for the day’s pit cook. The bricks needed to heat up a lot in order to have more heat and less flame – the perfect conditions for cooking salmon. Students helped out the entire time until it was time to feast, about six hours later.
Complimented by healthy food that is great roasted, students were treated to an incredible salmon lunch.

Thank you Henry for joining us and sharing your culture, tradition and food with us! These relationships are so special in SD62 and it’s these relationships that help us to continue to grow and learn with our school communities.

Community, tradition and fun!

Music Monday

This morning, students from nine of our schools gathered at The Q Centre to participate in the annual Music Monday. The sound of the 2,400 voices was amazing and filled the entire arena! You could feel the energy and as Board Chair Wendy Hobbs said, it truly was “magical” to experience and participate in.

Here is a short clip of Frère Jaques – wonderful!

International Walk to School Day

“For many parents around the world, the car has become the main means of transporting children to and from school. The proportion of journeys to school made by car has increased considerably in the last several years, with the knock-off effect being a gradual decline in the numbers of children walking and wheeling to and from school on a regular basis. The general themes that are promoted during IWALK include: increasing daily physical activity, improving safety, enhancing the environment, reducing levels of crime, developing community cohesion, promoting social interaction and reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools.”

SD62 Welcomes Tour de Rock Cyclists

Tour 3

Last week the Tour de Rock cycled through SD62 visiting nine schools in total! Students lined the streets outside their schools while cheering on the riders with handmade signs. The tour started its visit at Lakewood Elementary, then stopped at Ruth King Elementary, passing Belmont Secondary and the School Board Office on their way to Happy Valley elementary, and then continued out to Sooke where they visited EMCS, Saseenos Elementary, Sooke Elementary, and Journey Middle School.

Happy Valley elementary in particular had a very special day welcoming Hannah Day, a new kindergarten student and junior rider who is a two time cancer survivor. Hannah received a special school tour from school principal Karen DeCicco, and was warmly welcomed into her new class by her classmates.

Back to School Speed Zones

Welcome back students, teachers and support staff! From the Board of Education and everyone at SD62, here is to a  new year of fantastic learning opportunities!

Tips for Drivers

  • Every school day, unless otherwise posted, a 30-km/hr speed limit is in effect in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • When you’re dropping off your children in school zones, allow them to exit the car on the side closest to the sidewalk. Never allow a child to cross mid-block.
  • If a vehicle’s stopped in front of you or in the lane next to you, they may be yielding to a pedestrian, so be prepared to stop.
  • Watch for school buses. Vehicles approaching from both directions must stop for school buses when their lights are flashing.
  • Before getting into your vehicle, walk around your vehicle to make sure no small children are behind it. Always look for pedestrians when you’re backing up
