Music Monday 10th Anniversary

music monday newsletter 2This year marks the 10th anniversary for Music Monday, a special day in May when many Canadians celebrate music in their lives and schools. Many schools in the Sooke School District have participated in this event in past years by singing in their schools or coming together with other schools via Skype or in person.

In order to mark the 10th anniversary of this great event and to celebrate the direction our district has taken in making music education a priority in elementary schools, we are planning a choral event for nearly 2000 students and staff at the Q Centre in Colwood.

“This is an opportunity to recognize the work of our students, our staff, and our parents and to recognize that music is a huge part of our lives, has benefits to students learning, and is just one of those things in life that brings joy and belonging to participants,” says Sooke Music Teachers’ Association President, Maureen Garry. “I am happy that the district is embracing this event and am looking forward to 2000 students joining together in song.”

Eleven schools from the Belmont Zone will join together to sing four songs, including “Is Somebody Singing” written specifically for Music Monday 2013, and performed from space, by Commander Chris Hadfield. We will link into live feeds from across the country and raise the roof with singing!
